The following details the different pieces of information listed about each pitcher in the pitching stat sheet shown above:
- Type of pitcher (POS) – Types include:
- Starting pitcher – A pitcher who starts games
- Relief pitcher – A pitcher who enters the game after the starting pitcher is removed due to injury, ineffectiveness, or any other reason
- Middle reliever – These pitchers usually pitch in the 5th, 6th, or 7th innings
- Lefty specialist – A left-handed pitcher who specializes in throwing to left-handed hitters
- Closer – A pitcher who comes in to get the final outs in a close game when his team is ahead.
- Games played (GP) – The number of games the pitcher has played in
- Games started (GS) – The number of games the pitcher has started
- Quality starts (QS) – A pitcher records a quality start when he pitches at least six innings and allows three or fewer earned runs.
- Earned runs average (ERA) – A pitcher’s ERA is a calculation of the average number of earned runs a pitcher allows per nine innings. An earned run is a run that is scored without the aid of an error.
- Wins (W) – A pitcher receives a win when he is the pitcher when his team takes the lead for the rest of the game, and he has pitched at least five innings. If this hasn’t happened, then the win goes to the most effective relief pitcher.
- Loses (L) – A pitcher receives a loss when a run that is scored him ends up being the go-head run in the game, giving the opposing team a lead that it never gives up. A pitcher’s win-loss record is the number of wins a pitcher has compared the the number of losses.
- Saves (SV) – A save is given to the relief pitcher who ends the game for the winning team. A pitcher cannot receive a save and a win for the same game.
- Holds (HLD) – A hold occurs when a relief pitcher enters a game in a save situation and maintains his team’s lead for the next relief pitcher, while recording at least one out.
- Innings pitched (IP) – The number of innings pitched
- Hits (H) – The number of hits allowed by the pitcher
- Earned runs (ER) – An earned run is a run that scores against a pitcher without the help of an error
- Home runs (HR) – The number of home runs allowed by the pitcher
- Walks (BB) – The number of walks thrown by the pitcher
- Strikeouts (K) – The number of strikeouts thrown by the pitcher
- Strikeouts per 9 innings (K/9) – The average number of strikeouts the pitcher throws per 9 innings
