Brief: Biden with Covid, Monkeypox, Facebook Redesign

Tuesday, July 26, 2022

Short talking points:

  • Biden with Covid
    • A few days ago it was announced that President Joe Biden tested positive for Covid. His doctor is now saying that his Covid symptoms are “almost completely resolved”.
    • Biden has been taking Paxlovid, which is Phizer’s antiviral drug.
  • Monkeypox
    • With the Covid pandemic still in the picture, cases of Monkeypox have recently emerged in America. Approx. 18,000 cases have been confirmed outside of Africa since may, including 3,500 in the US.
    • New cases have been overwhelming found in the gay and bisexual community.
    • Biden is considering to declare it a public health emergency. He also plans to appointment a White House coordinator to oversee the response.
    • Ashish Jha is the White House coordinator for Covid. Anthony Fauci is the chief medical advisor to the president.
    •  Monkeypox is in the same family of viruses as smallpox. Note, it is not related genetically related to the chicken pox, even though chicken pox is also a pox virus. All pox viruses are characterized by the production of skin lesions.
    • Monkeypox is rarely fatal and the symptoms are much less sever than smallpox.
  • Facebook redesign
    • Apparently, Facebook has redesigned it’s platform so that it is now centered around algorithmically sorted media content shared by strangers, rather then content from your friends. I haven’t seen the new design yet but I am definitely looking forward to it.
