Long talking point:

  • G7 Summit wrapped up
    • What is the G7?
      • G7 (Group of Seven) is a group of the world’s seven largest economies. It includes
        • North America (2) : Canada, The US
        • Europe (4) : The UK, Italy, Germany, France
        • Asia (1) : Japan
      • 2 big economies not included:
        • Russia – joined in 1998, creating the G8, but it was excluded in 2014 for its takeover of Crimea.
        • China – has never been a member, despite its large economy and having the world’s biggest population. This is because its relatively low level of wealth per person means it’s not seen as an advanced economy.
    • What is the G7 summit?
      • At the G7 summit, the leaders of the G7 nations come together to share views on important issues the international community is facing, such as the global economy or regional affairs.
    • Where was it held?
      • This was the 49th G7 summit and was held for 3 days, from 19 to 21 May 2023 in Hiroshima, Japan.
      • The location of the summit rotates annually.
    • What is it doing about Ukraine?
      • Between the member nations, they have already imposed on Russia the biggest package of sanctions ever imposed on a large economy. They have blocked Russia from international commerce and the global financial system.
      • G7 countries who are also members of the Nato security alliance have also provided Ukrainse with weapons and other military equipment.
        • On a side note: Nato is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which was formed in 1949. It includes 30+ nations, including the US, UK, Canada, France, and more. Nato members agree to help one another if they come under attack. Neither Ukraine nor Russia are Nato members.
