Defense
- Error – A fielder is given an error if he fails to make an out on a play that an average fielder would have made. They can also be given an error if a mess up allows one or more runners to advance the bases. A batter doesn’t need to reach base for a fielder to be given an error. If the fielder drops a foul ball that extends an at-bat, he can be given an error.
Offense
- Caught stealing – This occurs when a runner on base attempts to steal but is tagged out before reaching the base.
- Extra-base hit – This is any hit that is more than a single. It includes doubles, triples, and home runs.
Pitching
- Balk – A balk occurs when a pitcher makes an illegal motion on the mound that the umpire deems to be deceitful to the runner(s) on base. If a balk is called, the runners on base are awarded the next base, and the pitch, if it was thrown, doesn’t count.
- Flyout – A flyout occurs when a batter hits the ball high in the air (not including line drives) and a fielder catches it before it hits the ground or fence.
- Wild pitch – A pitcher is charged with a wild pitch if it is so bad that the catcher is unable to handle it, and as a result, a baserunner advances.
Team
- Run differential – A team’s run differential is calculated by taking the total number of runs it has scored all season and subtracting the total number of runs it has allowed.
- For example, if a team scored 808 runs during the regular season and allowed 556 runs, that would give them a run differential of +252.
