Brief: Father’s Day, Stripe IPO, Day One acquisition, Flickr vs Tumblr

Tuesday, June 15, 2021

Short talking points

  • Father’s day is this coming Sunday on June 20th. Father’s day is not a federal holiday and falls on the third Sunday in June each year.
  • Rumors are floating that Stripe, the digitally based payment processing platform, will IPO in 2021, but there hasn’t been any word yet from executives if and when the company will IPO. Stripe is the closest competitor to Paypal. Both charge an online payment processing fee of 2.9% + 0.30 cents for every transaction. Most credit card companies charge the merchant between 1.3% and 2.9% of all transactions.
  • Did you know that Jaguar Land Rover is one luxury vehicles company?

Long talking point

  • WordPress.com owner Automattic acquires iOS and macOS journaling app Day One. The app has been downloaded more than 15 million times since its launch in the Apple App Stores in March 2011. It also received a lot of recognition from Apple, winning the App of the Year, Apple Editor’s Choice, and the Apple Design Award.
  • Note, Automattic owns a handful of popular blogging-related products, one of which is Tumblr. What is Tumblr anyway? I think we’ve all heard of it but do you know what it is? And what’s Flickr too??
  • Tumblr is an American microblogging and social networking website founded by David Karp in 2007. The service allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog. Users can follow other users’ blogs. Bloggers can also make their blogs private.
  • Flickr is an American image hosting and video hosting service, as well as an online community. It was created by Ludicorp in 2004 and is a popular way for amateur and professional photographers to host high-resolution photos, although most photos look like they were contributed by hobbyists.
