Long talking point
- Today is the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death. Here’s the story of Floyd’s death in a nutshell. George Floyd walked into a convenience store in Minneapolis, Minnesota, one year ago today and bought cigarettes with a $20 bill. After the purchase, the cashier inspected the bill and thought it was counterfeit. He called the cops. Five minutes later the cops show up and accost Floyd. They told him to get facedown on the ground with his hands behind his back. Officer Derek Chauvin (white) pinned Floyd (black) to the ground with his knee on his neck for 9 and a half minutes because Floyd wasn’t cooperating. Floyd kept denying any wrongdoing and kept saying he couldn’t breathe. Officer Chauvin and the other cops on the scene then took 5 minutes to get Floyd into the back of the police car. After several minutes, Floyd stopped speaking and laid motionless. They checked for a pulse and didn’t find one. He died on the scene. Officer Chauvin was charged with murder and was taken to trial. On April 20, 2021, the jury found Chauvin guilty. Sentencing is due to take place eight weeks after the verdict, around June 15, 2021.
