What is Christianity?

Christianity is a globally practiced religion that is based on the life, deeds, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus. In Christendom, Jesus is also referred to as The Christ, Jesus Christ, Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, The Messiah, and Immanuel.

Throughout history, Christianity is laced with numerous episodes of compelling events that sum up its very essence. It is, according to Bible writer Paul “the Gospel (Good News) of Jesus Christ, whom on the human front, is traced to the royal lineage of David and showcased celestial abilities, most notably, healing the sick, raising the dead, and resurrecting from the dead (Rom: 1-4).

An inquiry into the history of Christianity means to unravel the history of Jesus Christ, his life – actions and teachings, his demise – all that he accomplished in his 33-year human existence and his resurrection – proof that his claims were not false. These historical events form the tenant of the Christian Gospel.

Just as many prophets before him did, he emphasized the need to look to God, teaching the Gospel of justice, compassion, and love. His earthly ministry lasted three years before he was charged, brutalized, and executed by crucifixion for treason. His disciples claimed that he resurrected after three days, as he had predicted and that he appeared to them in various instances.

Jesus, while he walked the face of the earth, didn’t write any books or letters of his own. Writings about jesses emanated decades after his death. And a few of his disciples, who experienced firsthand, the power of Jesus’ resurrection, spread the Good News throughout various societies, creating ministries of faith across the Mediterranean and ultimately, the rest of the world. It was on one of their expeditions in Antioch – modern-day Turkey that the natives called the disciples “Christians”, meaning followers of the lifestyle of Christ.
