Winning the pennant in the MLB

Traditionally, a pennant is a tapered flag on a ship.

In the MLB, winning the pennant means winning the AL or NL championship series. The teams can symbolically or literally wave the flag. The early rounds of the playoffs are often referred to as the “race to the pennant.”

The teams that win the AL and NL pennants play against each other in the World Series.
